ABSTRACT: Gene flow from the lowland to the mountainous and glacial regions was examined in Heliconius melpomene rubicola (Druce) (Nymphalidae) through mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogenies, population genetics analyses and crossing experiments. We obtained 25 haplotypes from the entire gene region and tested six other H. melpomene individuals for these haplotypes. Phylogenetic analyses indicate two major lineages, one from the Western Mountain Range, the other from the Eastern Mountain Range. Gene flow was not restricted between the two ranges, and individuals from the same lineage also crossed in nature. The mtDNA phylogeny is congruent with the morphological phylogeny of H. melpomene and suggests that the species was formed by a parapatric speciation in the glacial refugium.Q:
